Cities: Uruk , Mari and Ur
Features of Ur:
1. They believe in life after death.
2. Jewellery, gold vessels, wooden musical instruments and many other things buried with some kings and queens at ur.
3. There was nuclear family.
4. The father was head of the family.
5. Gift was given by the groom’s people to the bride’s people.
Town planning in Ur:
1. Narrow winding streets and irregular shapes of house plots.
2. Sacks of grain and fire would have arrived on donkey’s back.
3. There was not street drainage.
4. House slopes of inward and have unpaved streets.
5.Superstition about the houses in Ur: The front door of the house did not opened towards another house meant good luck.
Features of Mari:
1. Agriculture and animals herders was the main occupation.
2. There was highly productive agriculture
3. They rear sheep and goat.
4. Cattle herder destroy the crops of farmers and this is the main cause which led conflict between them.
5. Herders need to exchange young animals, cheese, leather and meat in return for grains, metal tools. And the manure of a penned flock is also of great use to a farmer.
6.The palace at Mari of king Zimrilim:
- The place was the residence of the royal family, the hub of administration and a place of production of metal ornaments.
- There was 160 courtyards.
- There was 260 rooms.
- The rooms were 2.4 hectare area.
- The walls of the rooms are painted.
- Enterence was at the north.
Trade in Mari:
1. Located on the Euphrates in a prime position for trade in wood, copper, tin, oil, wine and other various other things.
2. Carried in boats along the Euphrates between the south and the mineral- rich upland of turkey, Syria and Lebanon.
3. Boats carrying grinding stones, wood, and wine and oil jars, would stop at Mari on their way to the southern cities.
4. Officers of this town would go to aboard for inspection.
5. A single river boat could hold 300 wine jars and levy a charge of about one-tenth the value of the goods before allowing the boat to continues downstream.
